Moving from PHP syntax to full-stack application work means learning how responsibilities fit together. An advanced developer should be able to trace a request, explain where a rule belongs, protect data, test behavior, and communicate deployment assumptions.
Strengthen PHP design first
Review types, exceptions, namespaces, Composer autoloading, interfaces, composition, and dependency injection. Refactor a small feature into understandable components and write tests around its business rules before involving a web framework.
Learn Laravel as an application workflow
Trace routes, middleware, request validation, controllers, policies, database operations, and responses. Keep controllers focused and make authorization decisions explicit. Use events and queues only when they clarify a boundary or move suitable work outside the request.
Connect data, APIs, and quality
Design relational tables and constraints, inspect MySQL query plans, and understand Eloquent query behavior. Build APIs with stable resource responses, pagination, authentication, and per-record authorization. Test success, invalid data, and denied access rather than only the happy path.
Finish with evidence
A capstone should have a bounded brief, synthetic data, a reproducible setup, automated tests, documented limitations, and a release checklist. A roadmap supports deliberate practice; it does not guarantee a job or certification.
