Learn the layers in a useful order
“Full stack” describes work across an application’s user interface, server-side behavior and data storage. It is tempting to start by installing several frameworks at once, but progress is steadier when each layer builds on an understandable foundation. A Java-focused path can begin with programming fundamentals, move through web and database concepts, and then connect those ideas with Spring Boot and React.
1. Build Core Java fluency
Practice types, conditionals, loops, methods, collections and exception handling. Learn to represent a problem with small classes and interfaces, and understand encapsulation and composition. Write methods that can be tested independently. You should be able to explain how your code behaves with both valid and invalid inputs before introducing a framework.
Use small exercises rather than only watching tutorials: model a library, task list or inventory, then add validation and tests. Read compiler and runtime messages carefully. Debugging is a core development skill, not a detour from learning.
2. Understand the web and relational data
Learn the browser’s role, HTTP methods and status codes, HTML, responsive CSS and basic JavaScript. These concepts help you understand what the frontend sends and how an API responds. Add SQL and relational design: tables, keys, constraints, joins and transactions. Even when a framework generates database queries, knowledge of the data model helps you detect incorrect behavior.
3. Build APIs with Spring Boot
Learn dependency injection and organize backend code around clear responsibilities. Controllers handle the HTTP boundary, services implement application rules, and repositories provide data access. Create REST endpoints that validate requests and return predictable status codes and response shapes. Add tests for the business logic and API contract.
Next, connect MySQL using Spring Data JPA. Practice entity mapping, relationships, transactions and schema evolution. Treat persistence as an explicit design concern: understand which records are loaded, how invalid data is rejected and how errors are surfaced.
4. Create the React interface
Learn components, props, state, forms and client-side routing. Connect the UI to the API with asynchronous requests. A reliable interface handles loading, success, empty and error states, not only the happy path. Match its request and response assumptions to the backend contract, and keep server-side validation authoritative.
5. Test, integrate and present
Use unit tests for focused rules and integration tests for important cross-layer workflows. Practice Git branches and review, prepare environment-based configuration and document how to run the application. For a portfolio project, explain its purpose, architecture, setup, test commands and known limitations. A small completed application is more useful than a large unfinished one.
How long does the roadmap take?
The time depends on your starting point, weekly practice and project scope. If you already know Core Java, you may move faster through fundamentals; if not, budget time to build confidence before Spring. A six-month course can provide structure, but progress still depends on consistent hands-on work and feedback.
AI coding tools can help explain errors or suggest test cases, but verify suggestions against project requirements and documentation. Never paste confidential data into unapproved tools, and make sure you can explain and maintain every part of your project.
